Tecklenburg graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor degree of education (2001). He was defensive lineman, two year letter winner, and 2 time academic all-conference. Tecklenburg also competed at linebacker for the University of Iowa from 1996-1999, prior to transferring to Northern Iowa.

A native of Marshalltown, IA, Tecklenburg and his wife Elizabeth live in Johnston and have three children, Maia (19), Trace (17) and Paxton (12). Tecklenburg currently serves as a middle school social studies teacher at Summit MS in Johnston.
