Benson graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in education. During his collegiate career, he was a three-year letter winner and earned Academic All-Conference honors in three seasons. Originally recruited as a quarterback, Benson also played running back and tight end during his collegiate career.

A native of Farmington, Benson and his wife, Nicole, live in Johnston with their three children: Brody, Brynlee, and Briggs. He currently serves as a Special Education Instructional Coach for Johnston Community School District.
