Bousum graduated from Buena Vista University with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics (2002). He was defensive back, a 3 year letter winner and 3 time academic all-conference.

A native of Marshalltown, IA, Bousum and his wife Kayla live in Johnston and have three children, Alaina (17), Kellan (15) and Kemper (13). Bousum currently serves at a high school math teacher at Johnston High School.
